Reflecting on Progress and Looking Ahead: DigiCell M30 Meeting

On 16 – 17 June 2026, the DigiCell partners gathered at Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) for the M30 Progress Meeting to review achievements and plan the final phase of the project. The meeting brought together representatives from across the consortium to discuss progress in battery materials characterisation, modelling, pilot-line applications, metrology, and standardisation activities. Participants shared recent results, highlighted ongoing collaboration across work packages, and aligned on upcoming dissemination and exploitation activities.

As the project approaches its conclusion, particular attention was given to consolidating ongoing work and ensuring that key results are effectively communicated to relevant stakeholders. Discussions also focused on preparations for the final reporting period and future outreach activities, including the project’s concluding events.

Reflecting on the meeting, DigiCell Coordinator Ferry Kienberger from Keysight noted: “The consortium has made steady progress across a wide range of activities. As we enter the final stage of the project, our focus is on bringing together the knowledge generated by all partners and maximising the impact of the results.”

A highlight of the first day was the guided visit to POLITO’s facilities, where participants had the chance to see the testing infrastructure that has supported the DigiCell project. The POLITO team explained how they synthesise materials and assemble coin cells based on post Li-ion chemistries such as lithium sulphur, Potassium ion and Lithium air. It was a great opportunity for the partners to discover the equipment and instrumentation used in the laboratory-scale fabrication of electrodes with innovative materials, and to learn more about associated manufacturing processes.

The meeting concluded with another highlight: the visit to the Battery Technology Center of Stellantis in Turin, the big facility that enables in-house testing and development of EV battery packs for upcoming Stellantis brand products. With up to 8000 square meters and 32 climatic chambers the Battery Technology Center is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The team from Centro Ricerche Fiat, belonging to Stellantis, showed how the batteries pack are managed from their arrival, via the safety checks, to the connections to the measuring hardware and then to the insertion in the climatic chambers for testing.
